Vacuum pot
If your school science experiments always worked out the how they were supposed to, then using a vacuum pot is going to be a piece of cake.
If they didn’t - then you may need a couple of try’s to get this right as it’s not the simplest method of brewing coffee and it’s not for everyone - but once you have mastered the technique the results can be outstanding – producing a very clean cup.
How to brew with a Cona vacuum pot
Phase 1 Fill the meth lamp with methylated spirit if using for the first time. You should get quite a few uses from one fill.
Phase 2 Place the wick and wick holder together and if brewing for the first time allow a little time for the wick to absorb meths.
Phase 3 Put the meth lamp in place and the funnel in its aperture on the stand. Fill the bowl with hot or boiling water to within about 2cm (1/2 inch) from the base of the neck.
NB: You can start with cold water but the process will take much longer.
Phase 4 Place the glass drainer (aka the filter) into the funnel, making sure it is loose.
Phase 5 Grind your coffee medium fine and tip into the funnel. You will need 2 rounded tablespoons per 240ml water (8 oz) water. We use 30g to 500ml of water.
Phase 6 Light the wick and wait for the first signs that the water is coming to the boil, place the funnel into the bowl and fit the rubber gasket to the bowl neck ensuring an air-tight fit. When all the water has been drawn into the top, with exception to a small amount, wait 3 minutes for the coffee to infuse. You can give it a stir, but be carful not to knock the filter.
Phase 7 Snuff out the lamp and when all the coffee has drained into the bowl, remove the funnel. Place it in the aperture on the stand, serve up some wonderful coffee.
NB: you should get a totally clean cup – if so – go to the top of the class – if not – stay behind and try again with a slightly courser grind.
