Press Pot

The press pot uses total immersion brewing for extraction. Total immersion brewing is where the coffee grounds are in contact with all the brewing water for the same period of time. In our opinion total immersion brewing is the best way to make coffee outside of espresso. It allows for full and complete extraction, moreover when correct water temperatures are adhered.

When using a Press Pot always boil the water before you start grinding the beans. This will allow it to cool to the correct temperature and prevent any scalding of the coffee.

How to brew using a Press Pot

Phase 1  Using filtered water will significantly improve the taste of your coffee. Fill a kettle with cold water and heat to between 190 degrees and 205 degrees. i.e. boil and leave for 45 seconds.

Phase 2  While the water heats, remove the lid and plunger/filter assembly from the pot. Fill you Press Pot with hot tap water. This will warm the glass of the press and help keep your coffee hot. Our Press Pots are kept on a cup warmer so no need to pre-warm.

Phase 3  Once the water in your kettle is heated, pour the tap water out of your Press Pot.

Phase 4  Grind coffee medium to coarse grind. The grind must be large enough so that the mesh filter works and does not get clogged. You will need 1 rounded tablespoon per "cup" 120ml (about 4fl oz). Measure the coffee into the Press Pot.

Phase 5  Slowly and steadily pour the hot water over the ground coffee, saturating all the grounds by changing where the water falls while you pour. Fill to the desired level. Most of the coffee will float. You can briefly, gently stir the water at this point and many grinds will sink.

Phase 6  Leave for 1 minute and then and carefully the grounds on the top to aid complete extraction and make the bloom really come out. 4/5 stirs will do it.

Phase 7  Replace the lid and plunger/filter assembly with the plunger just above the bloom. Don’t press down yet, but allow the coffee to steep for approximately 3 minutes.

NB: If you tilt the rod, or press too quickly you might ruin your brew by letting grounds escape from beneath the filter, or by overflowing the pot.

Phase 8  Allow sediment to settle for 30 seconds before pouring and enjoy the smooth taste of Press Pot brewed coffee. Don’t let the coffee sit in the pot for more than 15 minutes as it will actually keep brewing.
