We love Sumatran coffees for the deep and complex character they offer and this Mandheling is no different – but this lot we would say is a classic - deep, ominous and pungent base notes in full, with an nice undertone of dark chocolate - it also has a very pleasing, tangy readiness in the flavour which we think makes it one of the best Lots we have cupped.
This coffee is farmed on small acre plots between 1 to 2.5 hectares at an elevation from 3,200 to 6,000 feet. This grade 1 Sumatra Mandheling is double picked by individual farmers that form part of a local cooperative. Each farmer depulps and washes their own coffee then transports the wet parchment to a central drying mill where it is hulled and sundried on elevated tables. This unique processing method gives the beans their distinct flavour.
The etymology of 'Mandailing' (Mandheling) is said to be a compounding of the words mande, meaning 'mother', and hilang, meaning 'lost'. Thus, the name is said to mean "lost mother". Some research has suggested that the Mandailing are the descendants of the Batak, who migrated to the south before the coming of the Portuguese and Dutch colonisation of Sumatra.
