Coffee from the Kimel Estate has developed a reputation for being fantastic, but notoriously difficult to obtain - complicated by the remoteness of the island, unestablished freight routes, and the occasional inter-tribal disputes - nevertheless it is here and this cup upholds its reputation.
The Kimel Estate in the Wahgi Valley produces some of the finest coffee to be found in Papua New Guinea and this fruitfull cup is among the best we have cupped. The estate has growing elevations of between 4000-5000 feet in an area which has good rainfall and rich, well drained volcanic soil – all prime elements that produce a first class coffee.
Most coffee grown on PNG is grown on small farms "Coffee Gardens" where each farmer depulps and washes their own coffee then transports the wet parchment to a central drying mill where it is hulled - this kind of processing method gives the beans a unique wild note in the cup but no way as earthy as other Indonesian coffees such as Sumatra and Sulawesi.
Kimel is one of the larger coffee estates and has the advantage of being able to process the coffee right on the farm which gives the cup a completely different profile - a cleaner, more delicate and sophisticated character.
