Finca La Escondida means the hidden one and boy, is this farm hidden away! The farm is perched high above the beautiful Lago Apanas and is situated around 8 km north of Jinotega. The Department of Jinotega produces 80% of the nation's coffee.
The area around Jinotega is known as "La Ciudad de las Brumas" ("City of Mists") for the whisks of clouds that continuously feather up through the top of the valley.
La Escondida has a sister farm called San Jose, they are around 1km apart, but to drive from one farm to the other is about 5 kilometres given the territory. The road up to La Escondida is steep and difficult to navigate, more so in the wet season, but the views from the farm more than justify the trip.
La Escondida is a young farm with the first seedlings being planted in 2006 so it is surprising to find such a mature cup from such a young farm. However, the farm is very well managed and a lot of skills have been transferred from its sister San Jose so perhaps it's not that surprising.
This farm produces a truly exemplary coffee.
