What do you get when you have a near perfect climate, a soil that is super rich in mineral deposits and you plant and then nurture two of the best cultivars (SL28 and Blue Mountain) in Kenya?
Answer: One of the best coffees we've cupped to come out of Kenya.
Last year (09) we introduced a coffee from Githima, Kenya, it quickly became a clear winner and no wonder - it was beautiful. Then just when you think you've found the best another pops up that blows you away such as this Micro Lot from Kamusinde.
Kamusinde is actually located only a few miles from Kikai another micro lot coffee that we offer - again grown by a small co-op in the area of Nandi right on the edge of the Rift Valley at an altitude of 2100 meters, this is an older growing area that still has pockets of Blue Mountain and the wonderful SL28.
(most areas have replaced the older cultivars such as Blue Mountain and SL28 for those that are more disease resistant such as poorer quality Ruiru ll).
This coffee is sweet, clean and full-bodied it has dark dried fruit notes raisin, with ripe blackcurrant, and blackberry - this coffee hits all the right places.
NB: The SL 28 cultivar was selected at the former Scott Laboratories (now the National Agricultural Laboratories, NARL situated at Kabete) on a single tree basis from the Tanganyika Drought Resistant variety selected in Northern Tanzania in 1931. The prefix SL in the variety name are acronymous for Scott Laboratories where the variety was selected. The name is completed by a serial number (28) for the selection. The variety is suited for medium to high altitude coffee growing zones.
There are two harvesting seasons here a year, in Oct-Dec (main crop) and the May-July (early crop)
