This elegant coffee has consistently done very well in the Cup of Excellence competitions.
Established in 1872 by Cornelio Lemus, this farm is located ten miles southwest of the city of Santa Ana, in Las Cruces County, in the West of El Salvador. The farm is now owned by Margarita Diaz de Lopez, great granddaughter of the founder.
The Farm is medium sized having an area of 70 Hectares or 173 Acres, which also houses an impressive coffee Mill taking care of all the processing. The coffee growing areas are located on the slopes of the Santa Ana volcano with an elevation from 1,300 to 1,550 m above sea level. The soil is of course volcanic and thus rich in nutrients - prime for growing coffee only enhanced by the micro-climate which ranges from foggy and humid during the April to October winter season with temperatures from 17-33C (62-91 F) to dry and cool 7-22C (44-72F), during November to March summer season.
El Manzano was originally planted with one hundred percent Typica, but because of its low yield it was substituted for the Bourbon variety in the 1950s. Since 2004 new varieties have been added, but still around ninety percent remains exclusively the Bourbon variety but certain, well separated areas have been designated to other varieties like: Pacamara, Yellow Bourbon, Typica, and Kenya.
Harvest Period at El Manzano normally begins during the first week of December and runs through the last week of March, but becuase of the variable micro-climate the flowering period is variable and dictates when the harvest begins and ends.
