Fazenda Santa Alina has been in the Silva family since 1907, when Mr. Joaquin Bernardes Da Silva Dias and his brother Mr. Pious Lindolpho Da Silva Dias bought the land. At that time the farm was planted out with 50,000 trees of “regular coffee” and 30,000 of Red Bourbon trees. Some 55,000 new Red Bourbon trees were added over the next forty years.
Since the mid-1960s the farm has been developed to its present state. It is now managed by Joaquim Bernardes da Silva Dias, who took over from his father in 2001. Joaquim’s careful management produces an outstanding 100% Bourbon coffee, which is handpicked and sun dried.
The farm lies at between 1,150 and 1,400 metres above sea level in Brazil’s verdant Mogiana region, with conditions ideal for the production of superb specialty coffee. This rolling, fertile area runs along the São Paulo side of the São Paulo/Minas border, and is home to some of Brazil’s oldest coffee farms. The region is named after the Companhia Mogiana Estrada de Ferro train line, which was founded in 1882 to transport coffee out of the many coffee farms that were expanding into the area at the time.
