Bolivia used to suffer from huge quality issues - mostly brought about by poor pre and post-harvest techniques - but for a number of years the Bolivian coffee industry, with help from a number of development agencies and aid organisations, has been slowly improving and fine-tuning itself - focusing on the wet and dry-milling practices in order to produce fine quality in the cup. Today international recognition has grown to such an extent that around 70% of the country’s annual output from its 23,000 small growers is now exported to specialist markets.
Juan Condori farms coffee on 7 hectares in the mountain forests of Sud Yungas where the terrain is extremely rugged and varied formed by valleys, fluvial mountain trails and streams all contributing to the ecological diversity and richness of this area. The main varieties grown on the farm are the Yellow and Red Caturra, which thrive in the enriched soil.
The nutrients taken from the soil by the coffee trees are replenished by organic compost, maintaining the natural fertility of the soil.
The coffee is beautifully balanced, smooth with a creamy mouthfeel. From first sip to last, it is full of chocolate, caramel, butterscotch and hints of vanilla notes. There is an intriguing complexity to this cup.
